Blog - What To Do When People Call Your Opportunity An MLM Scam
Chances are if you’ve been in the network marketing profession for some time, you’ve been hit been with this objection a time or two, and how you respond says everything about you as a network marketing professional.
When prospects make comments like this, they are either uninformed about how the home based business industry really works, or they have a story to tell, about how they or their uncle Bubba got burned in one of “those things” aka an mlm scam.
So Is MLM Really A Scam???
Here’s Wikipedia’s Definition!!!
Network marketing like insurance, medical, and other industries is highly regulated by the FTC. There are rules and regulations that outline how network marketing companies operate in both the United States as well as around the world.
Companies in this profession must have a physical product or service that is used by a customer base. Representatives cannot make money solely for sponsoring people. Products or services must be purchased before anyone can make a commission. Pyramid Schemes are illegal and are the quickest way for MLM companies to be shut down!
So now that we got that cleared up, let me address the REAL MLM SCAM!
Most people who scream mlm scam, are really saying that they or someone they know joined a network marketing business, and did absolutely nothing! They got excited about the opportunity however when it came time to roll up their sleeves and get to work, they did absolutely nothing. They expected to sign up, do nothing, and get paid residual income for the rest of their life.
This creates some bitterness which later leads to them to criticizing this industry and attempting to tell anyone who may be pursuing network marketing not to do it, based on their negative experiences.

Ways To Handle The MLM Scam Objection!
When a prospect hits you with the mlm scam objection you can do one of two things. Do what most inexperienced networkers do and hit your prospect with some canned rebuttal and get defensive which usually doesn’t work out well, or you can ask your prospect questions, and find out exactly why they feel the way that they do.
Most times through asking the right questions and uncovering how they feel, you will learn that they have a story. That story is important as it will tell you exactly how to get them started if you pay close attention.
Maybe they had no support because their up-line quit the business, or perhaps they didn’t know how to get started. It’s up to you to provide them a solution, and show them how this time things can be different through your help.
Your job is to educate, collect a decision, and move on. You’re in the sorting business! If someone thinks your business is a mlm scam and is stuck in their ways, they’re probably not a good fit for your business anyway.
